The Marble Falls High School boys soccer team stomped San Antonio Kennedy 5-0 Jan. 14 for the Mustangs’ fourth consecutive victory.

At the Round Rock Cedar Ridge tournament Jan. 9 and 11, the Mustangs defeated Leander Rouse 3-1 and Cedar Ridge 1-0.

Against Kennedy, Marble Falls scored 3 goals in the final 15 minutes of the first half then added two more in the second half.

Sophomore Esteban Dominguez had the “hat trick” thanks scoring 3 goals. Seniors Alexis Fregoso and Jordan Guzman had the other goals.

“We started really slow,” head coach Ryan Craven said. “We started to wake up a little bit in the second half. It was better in the second half.”

During the first half, Craven implored his athletes to apply more pressure on the Rockets and the ball. That may have propelled them to the strong finish toward the end of the half.

Meanwhile, the defense kept a clean stat sheet.

“We have about five dudes back there that just go in there and dominate: Will Guzman, Presiliano Suarez, Rigo Lopez, Brandon Guevara, Joaquin Aguilar,” the coach said. “We tried Joaquin Aguilar at the top tonight and he did the best. He’s running down all the others.”

The tournament wins are more impressive considering Marble Falls was without seven players, who had prior commitments. That forced Craven to “mix and match people at different spots.”

“That’s one thing that’s cool about our team,” he said. “We have four or five players who can play multiple positions.”

And it also helps when athletes are motivated to show coaches what they can do. That was what happened with Guzman. He entered the Kennedy contest and performed so well that coaches had to give him more minutes.

“He’s a bench player who’s probably getting five minutes a game, and he got a bunch tonight,” Craven said. “He took advantage of his opportunity. He has positive energy. He’s like an extra coach on the sideline, he’s always engaged, so it’s great to see that a senior like him can get in there and make things happen, so that was pretty cool.”

Marble Falls welcomes Pflugerville Connally Friday, Jan. 17, and Austin Bowie Wednesday, Jan. 22. Junior varsity B plays at 4:15 p.m., junior varsity A competes at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity at 7:15 p.m.
